A VPN (virtual private network) encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a server somewhere else, which helps on public Wi-Fi and lets you reach a work network from home. Windows 11 gives you two ways to use one: install your VPN provider’s app, or add a VPN profile by hand in Settings.
Quick answer: the easiest way is to install your VPN provider’s Windows app, sign in and click Connect. If you have a server address from your employer or provider, open Settings > Network & internet > VPN > Add VPN, enter the details and click Save. Either way it takes about five minutes.
Method 1: Use your VPN provider’s app (easiest)
Most people should start here. Microsoft’s own guidance for a personal VPN service is to check the Microsoft Store for an app or the provider’s website for connection settings.
- Subscribe to a VPN service and download its Windows app from the provider’s website or the Microsoft Store.
- Install the app and open it.
- Sign in with the account you created.
- Pick a server location or leave it on automatic.
- Click Connect. The app confirms when the tunnel is active.
- Check it. Search “what is my IP” in a browser and confirm the location changed.
Tip: turn on the app’s kill switch if it has one, so your traffic stops if the VPN drops.
Method 2: Add a VPN manually with Windows 11’s built-in client
Use this when your employer, school or provider gives you a server address and sign-in details instead of an app. Microsoft’s steps are on its Connect to a VPN in Windows page.
Create the VPN profile
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Go to Network & internet > VPN.
- Click Add VPN.
- For VPN provider, choose Windows (built-in).
- In Connection name, type a name you will recognize, such as “Work VPN”.
- In Server name or address, enter the address from your provider or IT team.
- For VPN type, choose the type your provider uses (for example IKEv2, L2TP/IPsec, SSTP or PPTP).
- Choose the type of sign-in info: a username and password, one-time password, certificate or smart card.
- Enter your username and password, if required, and click Save.
Connect to it
- Click the Network icon at the right of the taskbar.
- Select your VPN and click Connect. You can also go to Settings > Network & internet > VPN and click Connect next to it.
- Enter your sign-in details if prompted.
When it works, the VPN settings page shows Connected under the name, and a blue shield appears on the taskbar.
Edit, disconnect or remove it
In Settings > Network & internet > VPN, select the connection and choose Advanced options to edit details or proxy settings, Disconnect to stop, or Remove to delete the profile.
Does Windows 11 have a built-in VPN?
Yes and no. Windows 11 includes a built-in VPN client, meaning it can connect to a VPN server, but it does not include a VPN service. You still need a server address and account from your employer, school or a VPN provider. It also does not offer a server list, a kill switch or one-click location switching the way a provider’s app does.
Microsoft notes that the VPN feature is not available in Windows 11 SE.
| Provider app | Built-in client | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Install and sign in | Enter server details by hand |
| Server choice | Large list | One per profile |
| Extras | Kill switch, split tunneling and more, depending on the app | Basic connection only |
| Best for | Privacy and streaming | Work or school networks |
Windows 11 VPN not connecting? Quick fixes
- Recheck the details. A typo in the server address, username or password is the most common cause. Confirm the VPN type matches what your provider uses.
- Check your internet. Open a website without the VPN to confirm you are online.
- Try another server or protocol in your VPN app.
- Restart your PC and your router, then connect again.
- Remove and re-add the profile in Settings > Network & internet > VPN.
- Reset your network settings as a last resort. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset, follow the prompts and restart. This removes saved Wi-Fi networks and other network configuration, so note your passwords first.
- Contact your provider or IT team if it still fails, since some networks block VPN traffic.
What to look for in a VPN
- A clear no-logs policy, ideally independently audited.
- A Windows app with a kill switch.
- Modern protocols such as WireGuard or IKEv2.
- Server locations that match what you need.
- Transparent pricing. Be careful with “free” VPNs, since they may limit data or earn money in ways that affect your privacy.
